In recent months, sport at 878 (Highworth) Squadron has gone from strength to strength. At the end of September, a group of our cadets made the journey down to Tidworth to participate in this year’s sports trials. The sports on offer included hockey, netball, football and rugby, and cadets represented the Squadron in each of these. At the end of the day, our cadets had performed wonderfully, with four of them being selected for the teams of their choice – Sgt Mikyla Bagley for Netball, Cpl Nile Austin for Rugby and Cadets Sam Brown and Thomas Mobley for football. Congratulations to all of 878’s sporting stars!
Another cadet who made a splash at wing events this year was Cdt Henry Shortland. Henry was selected to represent Dorset and Wiltshire Wing at the Regional Swimming Trials in October where he obtained 2 Gold and 1 Silver medal! This is a huge achievement to be recognised as one of the best, not just in our Wing but in the whole of South West Region Air Cadets. Well done Henry!
Around Christmas time, 878 Squadron becomes a hive of activity, and this year is no different. Along with our usual Christmas themed fundraising evening, our cadets also went out into the community. Packing bags at Asda on the final Saturday before Christmas doesn’t exactly sound like everyone’s idea of a holiday treat, but thanks to the generosity of the public, our cadets raised £1068.94 to be split between the Squadron and the RAF Benevolent Fund. On the same day, we also handed over 20 boxes of food items to the Swindon Food Bank as part of the ‘Reverse Advent Calendar’ scheme.
A wonderful end to a fantastic year for 878!
